Alcohol – problem drinking
Excessive alcohol use, including problem drinking, alcohol dependence, and binge drinking, is closely linked to mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and mood disorders. While some people drink to cope with stress, alcohol can worsen mental health symptoms and lead to addiction, affecting personal relationships, work, and overall well-being.
Signs of Problem Drinking

- Drinking more or longer than intended.
- Struggling to cut down or stop drinking despite efforts.
- Cravings or strong urges to drink.
- Increased tolerance (needing more alcohol to feel the same effects).
- Withdrawal symptoms (shaking, sweating, anxiety when not drinking).
Emotional & Mental Health Signs

- Drinking despite negative effects on relationships, work, or health.
- Feeling guilty or ashamed about drinking habits.
- Memory lapses or blackouts from heavy drinking.
Mental Health Conditions Associated with Alcohol Abuse
Depression & Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD)
- Alcohol is a depressant and can worsen depressive symptoms.
- Some drink to self-medicate, leading to a vicious cycle of drinking and worsening mood.
Anxiety & Panic Disorders
- Short-term alcohol use may reduce anxiety, but chronic drinking leads to increased anxiety, panic attacks, and withdrawal-related anxiety.
Bipolar Disorder & Alcohol Abuse
- People with bipolar disorder are at higher risk of alcohol dependence, which can trigger manic or depressive episodes.
PTSD & Alcohol Dependence
- Many trauma survivors turn to alcohol to cope, but it increases emotional instability and worsens PTSD symptoms.
Alcohol-Induced Psychosis
- Heavy drinking or withdrawal can cause hallucinations, paranoia, or delusions in some individuals.
When to Seek Help
- Drinking is affecting your work, relationships, or health.
- Using alcohol to manage stress, anxiety, or depression.

What is anxiety?
Anxiety can be a problem when you have too much feeling of worry or fear about every day issues that is out of proportion. Most of the time you will feel restless, tired, lack concentration, palpitation and have sleep problem. This is referred to as Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD).

What treatment can you expect from Consultdoc?
Our doctors will take a detailed history of your symptoms during a consultation. Depending on severity and duration of your symptoms, they will offer you different treatment options which can be a combination of self help measures you can do at home, a self referral for talking therapy like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Lastly they can suggest medication.
Self help measures can include discussions like sleep hygiene, the benefits of regular exercise, the use of over-the-counter medicines and stopping smoking etc.
